The Ad Before the Ad: How an Unscripted Howie Mandel Reaction Became 3DCrystal.com’s Holiday Creative

TORONTO, ON — October 2026 —Sometimes the most powerful moment in an advertisement happens before anyone delivers the script.

That’s what happened during the creation of a 3DCrystal.com digital campaign featuring comedian and television personality Howie Mandel.

Before filming the polished commercial, 11-year-old Amarah who has helped with the family business since the age of 4, had an idea. She asked for photographs of Mandel’s family and used them to help create a personalized 3D family collage inside crystal displays. She then instructed the production team to keep the finished piece hidden beneath a blanket until Mandel arrived for the scheduled filming.

Most importantly, she wanted the cameras recording when he first saw it.

“I told the entire team to hide it under a blanket and record his reaction,“ Amarah explains in behind-the-scenes footage

Her reason was simple: “I thought it was important to do that because viewers can see his real reaction.”

The cameras captured exactly that. As Mandel discovered members of his family appearing dimensionally inside the crystal, his immediate responses included:

“Are you kidding me?”

“Holy moly. This is my family.”

“This is amazing. This is such a gift.”

In additional footage, Mandel examines the crystal closely and remarks: “They’re actually inside the crystal. It’s like they’re popping right out of this.” Later, he adds: “The pictures come to life.Amazing.”

The unscripted reveal was filmed before the team moved on to the traditional advertising component of the production.

In that finished commercial, Mandel describes his 3DCrystal as “one of my favorite gifts ever” and describes personalized 3D crystals as “sentimental, unique, and they last a lifetime.”

An Unexpected Marketing Lesson

For 3DCrystal.com, the spontaneous reaction created something a scripted advertisement could not easily reproduce: the moment someone recognizes a person they love inside the crystal for the first time.

“We planned to create a professional campaign with Howie, but the moment we kept coming back to was before the script—when he saw his family and forgot about the commercial. That’s when we realized the reaction itself tells the product story better than almost anything we could write.”

That experience is now helping shape 3DCrystal.com’s Holiday 2026 campaign. Rather than focusing solely on the object being given, the company is highlighting the emotional moment personalized gifts can create when they are opened.

From One Photograph to a Dimensional Keepsake

3DCrystal.com transforms customer photographs into dimensional imagery that is laser engraved inside crystal. Customers can upload a photograph and begin with a digital preview before selecting from multiple crystal shapes and sizes.

As of August 2026, the company’s public website says it has been established for more than 20 years, carries a 4.8-star rating across more than 80,000 reviews, and promotes a free digital preview instantly on the site.  They also state delivery as quick as next day.

A Holiday Campaign built around real reactions

The company plans to expand the concept through the 2026 holiday season by showcasing not only Mandel’s reaction but eventually the reactions of customers, families and gift recipients.  After all, the reaction is the gift.
